An easy way to explain it is:
White Hat: Natural/Organic
Black Hat: Artificial
Basically White Hat SEO is mostly on site as well as promoting your site and making links that are useful to users. In Black Hat SEO people make links not in the purpose of getting people to click on them but in the purpose of manipulating Google to rank them higher.

There is no any BlackHat or Whitehat according to Google. Every linkbuilding technique is against the Google rules and it considered as trying to manipulate the search results. So don't care about it. Just try techniques one by one and see what works for you.

Both the black hat and white hat techniques are used to get higher ranking in search engine.
The only difference is black hat method uses unethical way that doesn't follows any guide lines. Some of the techniques are keyword stuffing, door way, link farming.
White hat method follows search engine guide lines. some of the white hat techniques are quality content, quality inbound links, keyword research ..etc

You will hear a lot of different opinions on this matter but here is what it comes down too.
Blackhat - Doing any means necessary to rank or market your product by breaking companies terms of service.
Safe bet blackhat - Refining your strategy to only services you feel will not get penalized and increase your quality content.
Whitehat - Build a site and hope to God it ranks.

I wouldn't call it unethical. The definition of unethical is lacking moral principles. This definition goes out the window when attributing it to following the rules of an unethical corporation such as google. They accept almost 5 million dollars a month in adwords from amazon, and amazon rules the search results for the majority of keywords. Amazon uses more blackhat techniques than anyone here does. Amazon also uses people for their own financial gain; many here don't. I have posted enough about how they do it. This is what we are all competing against-follow the rules of an unethical corporation that accepts money from another unethical corporation in order for us to pay our bills and feed our children. I like to define blackhat as fighting the bullies that the corporations are.

Blackhat = get your site ranked in a few weeks even though it isn't that hot or interesting, but thats ok to a point, just makes them click on your aff links or ads faster
Whitehat = spend every spare hour making "quality content" to find out five years later that you made a mistake and have wasted 15k hours of your life and spent a fortune in the process

I am more interested in why you would call "white"hat marketing for methods that are ok or acceptable and use "black"hat for things that are not. I suppose any color could be used or another name for it....but its not. Interesting.

It's like black and white magic. White magic is good and selfless (boring), black magic is bad and selfish (fun). Search engine's will not punish you (as far as I'm concerned) for white hat tactics, but black hat tactics (especially those that are done carelessly) will result in punitive measurements being taken against your website.
Actually, since Google at any time can flip a switch and making something "wrong" then Whitehatters can get
penalized to later on.
