Can any one explain this bizarre attempt at negative SEO?

OK so i have a suspicion that my site is being targeted by negative SEO.

I'm having literally 1000s of domains appear in Google Search Console.

They look spammy - example : usacancerclub.xyz

I click on any of the links they all redirect to here: https://www.cbdpure.com/ which appears to be a fully legit website - but it's toatlly unrelated to my site - different industry and different country - it's so weird

I 'view source' and can't find my domain on any of the sites but then what is also really weird is i check the backlink on ahrefs and it shows its status as 'found - do follow link'

For the life of me I can't work it out. It doesn't appear to have any affect on my rankings. Before I ranked average #3 for a wide range of competitive keywords and this has been going on for months now but since the march update I'm sitting pretty at #1 for most...

Any insight at all no matter how brief will be very much appreciated

Maybe they scraped your domain and try to get noticed from noisy webmasters . You clicked and made some traffic...
Dont know what your domain is neither if they put it somewhere inbetween the code.

If there are no issues in rankings i would not do anything. Just check it and be prepared. You could disavow it in gsc. but i think google already got behind that spammy thing.

we all have shitty backlinks showing up in our google search console. sites that harvest other sites.... i never worried about it and i am doing fine. google keeps saying ignore shitty backlinks and dont think about it. you dont even need to use disavow tool for it.

I had this kind of similar experience twice on the same site...first time I was ranking on the first page and I got attacks of spammy links, my ranking was dropped... I was not even first 10 pages...

After someone suggested to disavow all links from webmaster tools, and I got ranking back in three to four months...
on a second time, nothing had happened, I am still ranking on the first page with tons of useless links...

I also see many obviously spammy links on Console, but I never made them. It does affect my rankings, which have slipped to pages 4 and 5 from 1. But I am hesitant to use disavow tool because G says use it very carefully and only if you think you (or somebody you appointed to do SEO) made those backlinks. I expect that this should not harm (anybody can point a ton of backlinks at any site, the site owner has no way to counter this, should he keep on disavowing it?)So I have done nothing and still evaluating how to counter this.

in my case, my all earning from that blog was gone... so the blog was pretty much useless.... so I took my chances and it worked out...

Read the article, but the author himself admits that it is difficult to detect and he has no idea on how to counter this. Do you have nay thoughts on this? (I did not go through the video below the same article, maybe it has some solutions)?

This is not a canonical attack.

The whole idea of checking rankings is flawed
If they are not problematic, there is no need to do anything at all. Why bother?
