I have, however, seen a lot of people recommending ALN blasts, even to new sites.

Yes, you will get good fast rankings but in a few weeks you will also get a message in Webmaster Tools about "Unnatural links detected" and a -50 penalty the majority of the time. Its your choice and your site if you want to take the big risk or play safe.
So what you're saying is I should submit my competitor and he will be penalized? Cool.

If your competitor has a newer site with bad link profile then yes you can hurt them. If i can hurt my own sites with - 50 after an ALN blast then why would thesame thing not happen if i was to order thesame exact service on someone else with low link profile and suddenly gets 1000 blog posts over night??
So yes depending on the competition, there are ways to at least temporarily harm them.

How long do ALN -50s last?
Where do you recommend pointing the ALN, seems like a bit of a waste for the money to just point to 2.0s or something, or do you just not use it?
So if my new site goes viral and I get a bunch of links overnight, I'll probably get a penalty...?

people that are selling the blasts are one of the reasons the network is starting to suck... it makes me sad
we all know that these link networks are not for the very long term, but the way some idiots are using them is just stupid

Not so much the speed, but the ALN footprint (poorly spun content) left on a backlink profile, which is different from that left on the backlink profile of a site that goes viral.

Ok course not, this is a separate matter. If your site goes viral you will be getting links from all over the place with a very wide combo of anchor text such as "Hey check out the video on this site" and not links all from ALN with a few "Click here" that some people consider as link diversity!
Google algo and manual checks looks at your link profile and if you get 1k from a certain network like ALN then its a massive footprint that may or may not get you - 50. I know this becuase some of my sites got hit while others were left alone. Its luck of the draw and up to you!

- 50 typically lasts for 30/60/90 days but also it could be much longer if your site gets a manual review and they find other things wrong with it.
Its like geting pulled over for speeding, then the cop checks your license and registration against their database and you may get flagged for something else, eg maybe you dont actually have a licence or maybe you dont have car insurance etc etc. So even if you get - 50 for one thing, your penalty might last longer if you have other offenses.
Yes, i personally would recommend doing blasts at web 2.0 and small amounts direct to your site.
