I bought a great niche domain, there is medium competition, but I thought I would keep the site fresh and post articles directly to the site relating to the domain and keywords.
My question is:
If onsite SEO and content is good and I hire a third party to start posting backlinks can it EVER be #1 even if it is just a wordpress site?

P.S. The current #1 spot is a full blown website with over 200 internal pages and over 3000 backlinks.

Of course it can, it's possible that autoblog without any plugins at all can rank above trusted domains, for longtails.

There is nothing wrong with wordpress system and it can be ranked first. But that depends on other factors.

Great news!
Thanks guys!
Besides the outlines approach I stated in the OP, would you recommend anything else (that doesn't cost too much money, of course)
;)

Just create many blogs,it's the numbers game.

Of course it can. Do as much on page SEO as you can while you build links (natural first, before you try anything more BH). Then just give it time and tweek as you learn.

Sounds like you can beat the competition. How long has your site been online?

It is not about wordpress or blogger or any other hosting medium. It is about onsite and offsite optimization and how well you site is ahead of your competitors.

Here is example, may be keyword not so good
Code:
  http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=What+type+of+cars+are+good
but the same page rank for different keywords
What type of cars are good for guys
What type of cars are good for guys to drive
What type of cars are good to drive
type of cars are good to drive
type of cars are good
type of cars are good for guys
type of cars are good for guys to drive

the blog have only platinum seo for 2 weeks, before it was without any plugins at all.

I have a couple of them ranking at number one and designed using wordpress!

My WP site is ranked #1 for several competive keywords. I would go so far as to say WP sites are loved by G and probably have a real good chance of ranking high especially if its a high quality site.

Yep! It depends on your keywords, SEO, backlinks, etc.

OP: I have a WP site at #1 w/Google right now. It's definitely possible. Just treat it like any other site. Properly optimize it and "SEO" the crap out of it and you'll be fine.

HAHAHA!!!
Well that's good news, so I guess my next question is going to be, how many pages of content will I need for it to become "quality"? is one related blog per day enough????

Do you mean one related blog post or are you going to build a totally new blog each day?

just daily updates to the site. will that be ok?

You don't need daily, probably weekly. This is more on how long you can maintain the updates not how frequently IMHO. But ofcourse, the more the better.

It's don't matter 1 page or 2 day, you need to avoid footprints and look like as human blog, for google. Of course if we talk about autoblogs.
For example post every day at the same time is footprint and so on.

Got it.
Thanks.
But if google only refreshes (indexes) my site every 3 weeks or so, how will they know? The time stamps on the blog entries?
