Yes i have ranked one website in competitive niche with 90% manual links(i outsourced them to a team) it took 9 month to rank but it survived panda/penguin and will probably survive all google updates in future.

Honestly, you can, but there's really no reason to. We've been able to rank sites perfectly fine using automated back links. You just need to make these automated links intelligently and to emulate manual/natural back linking.

If you're insistent on manual back linking, the only way you can honestly rank a site with manual back links (that are done by you, not by a VA/assistant or a team of assistants) is by doing very thorough and proper keyword research to find keywords that have almost zero seo competition. Yes, you can rank with manual links. Getting high PR is to get quality BLs from high PR sites. It doesn't matter it's done by any software or manually

My wife has got a culinary site. She is using just manual backlinking for one year now. She has got 800 linking domains and great rankings for very good keywords, some of them quite competitive. You can rank well with manual backlinking, but not in all niches you can get into TOP10 with that method, unless you have a team of workers doing this manual backlinking, which is really not cost effective.
