Can a website get ranked with only manual backlinking ?

Yes..I have front page sites with only 4-5 manual links..good sites though

Sure why not! really depends on the quality of the backlinks that you build and also the keyword competition.

Mostly manual work will give better results, ofcourse you can able to rank sites using manual backlink creation itself.

If you can do this manually, you will get result.

of course its possible, and its the best way, because by doing so you are automatically immune to all of googles updates, it simply depends on kw competition, and that will define how much work you ll have to put into it.

Definitely can. But it definitely takes longer.
One of my website it took me 5 years to get top 10 for very competitive terms using manual link building.
It took me 5 months to get top 5 for the same competitive terms using blackhat.
And now it's took me 4 months (and counting) to lift google penalty
So you need to get the happy medium for rank/time

QUALITY TRUMPS QUANTITY EVERY TIME - 'auto' is almost all about obtaining lots of low quality links.
If you know what you are doing, getting some HIGH value links is MUCH better. One of my sites easily competes with (in fact hammers) guys with 5-10 times the number of links (and many of my links are from a while back - before I knew what I was doing and didn't have much real success in those early days).
The problem with 'auto', low value links is that they can often easily be identified as SPAM by an algorithm and also by your competitors - who file a SPAM report with Google.
'Manual' every time (although many of the guys here operate with 'disposable' domains that can just be dropped when caught - and quickly rank a new one via 'auto', drop it, quickly rank a new one...).
