Ok lets say you are focusing on 1 page since its your money page.

Can you be penalize for building too much of it especially when its in the inner page?

Let's say for example you follow general guidelines like diluting the page with generic anchor text so it won't be overoptimize.

When will building links to it be considered too much?

I've never heard of backlinks having limits, so I don't think you'll get penalized for this thing alone. But if you're only going to build 100s of links to that page while other pages (and especially the homepage) of your domain have no links it will look suspicious and could get you into trouble.

A normal backlinking profile contains a lot of variables:

- d0follow + nofollow links
- text + image links
- homepage + inner pages links
- in-content + sidebar / footer / header / wherever links
- branded + exact / partial match + generic + URL anchor texts

and so on... Basically, you want to mix and match all of these types of links so that the backlinking profile of your site looks as normal as possible because, in reality, sites get a diverse amalgamation of references and you want to mimic this behavior. Also, while you do want as a diverse backlinking profile as possible, you will still want to point your most powerful links to the (inner) pages that you wish to rank, or at least to the homepage of your site because when your site is new the homepage should get most backlinks.

The general rule of thumb is to build more links as your site starts to gain traction

More traffic = Higher probability of people linking to your site

There isn't some strict and general rule about this, but you should adjust it to your own sense of which amount of links is a decent one. It's important not to overload your content with links, especially if they can't be related to the information presented there. Usually, links go between 5 to 10 per page, but it also depends on the actual length of each page.

Having a too much links on a page is not a major issue, but it is best to have not more than 100. If its more can have
  • Indexation issues
  • Diluted link juice
  • Poor user experience
PageRank is divided by the number of outlinks (external links) used. The more you use, the less potent each is

If you're really worried you can always check how many links your competitors are building using Ahrefs or similar tools and go from there.

Guys I am talking about backlinks.

I sometimes cant tell if ahrefs are accurate because some if them could be using tons of pbn.

I sometimes only see 1 or 2 links but they are ranking well

I think it's not a matter if you build backlinks in the relevant websites. Else, it will be marked as spam.

According to me, the amount of backlinks depends on the need of the keywords you want to rank.

No tool is ever going to be 100% accurate, but Ahrefs, SemRush, Majestic or even Moz will give an indicator of the number of links.
