    Where am I?
    Hi Guys

I'm a newbie and am very interested in seo, I have some questions which I hope members here can enlighten me.

    1) Is it possible for a competitor who can't outrank me, use black hat seo to target my site and get my site banned or sandboxed?

    2) If it is possible, is there any way we can prevent our site from being harmed by our competitor?

    Thanks in advance.

    1) Yes, a competitor can get your site sandboxed (but not banned). Actually I've seen a case study about this attached to a scrapebox tutorial pack somewhere in the download section.
the result is that it will only benefit to you in the long run, because a few weeks or months later, your site will come back stronger and better ranked than before.

    2) Nope, you can't control what is done outside of your website. But your competitors can't really actually "harm" your website. And they'd better work to benefit to their site instead of trying to harm you. This would be a losing strategy, and you'll be the winner in the long run (see 1) )

As others have said, a competitor can get you sandboxed. But in the long-run it's going to help you more than it hurts them.

Everything you said can happen. But you see, every niche has plenty of competitors fighting for top honors, and still it will be a very rare chance that a site will get unfortunately 'hit' and 'sunk' by some jealous competitor. So don't worry.

Need prevention: Normally it is seen that an authority site will be extremely difficult to be targeted/torpedoed, so make your site really good so that even if someone wants to harm your site, he will be confronted by walls and walls of difficulties.

Having said that, it is observed that now even Google is sinking some of the sites, very big as well as very small sites because of various reasons, so it's a chance you have to take as in any brick-n-mortar business and keep your 'baby' on top of things. Also don't depend on one site alone, create more sites in different niches (and in the same niche also), and even if one of those gets sunk, you'll still have others alive.

So don't worry and create better sites -- You may also have some sites which by their nature, can be attacked by many competitors. So try to create many sites -- both BH as well as WH. BH sites too can be very beneficial, but some of those may live natural short lives, whereas other sites can keep running till they die natural death. Any niche never always stays on the peak, all niches do ups and downs, so better have strong strategies to have an all-round approach to be really successful. :)

    P.S.:
There can be cases where many of your sites will confront a jealous competitor, but of course not every niche you rank for will have such competitors who will go after sinking your sites. So when you confront a niche where your sites are being sunk and you still want to be there, try different keywords and rank for those. May be your jealous/sinker/'killer' competitor isn't present in SERPS for those different keywords, making your sites safe. :)

Try such different approaches and in due time you'll know which are safe avenues where you can drive your sites and which are not. It may be difficult task to have such energy-sapping strategies but this may give you the best protection. And of course, these many precautions are only necessary if you're really that unlucky to get attacked -- if you're lucky then well and good, but if you're unlucky, you still have other sites surviving. And you may get very successful with a chance that many sites will do well, and even if a small percent of so many sites are successful, you shall be a Winner! :)

I dont believe that your competitor would be able to sandbox you, if that were able to happen, then everyone would do that to their competition, and there wouldn't be any competition out there to outrank you.

I completely agree with you, I think getting sandboxed by a competitor is a myth.

How would you know if a competitor is trying to sandbox you?

This is not possible, simply because if it was possible, i would have knocked out all my competition a way long time ago. You have to think it would never be set up this way simply because it is bad business ethics, everyone would simply beat the system, not that we already arent :)

No way of telling, Just simply watch your backlink count. But even if they are trying to hurt your ranking most of the time they will end up making it better. They add you link juice :)

So some say it is possible, others say it is not.

Just like some people say it is easy to make money through SEO, while others say it is not. There is always 2 sides of a coin.
