Calling another guy "Dear" is NOT normal.

so you mean we should not say "Dear" ok your are laughing coz you think when they speak dear it sounds gay to you, what about you, when you try to speak in Hindi, do you have any idea what you speak, but we don not laugh on you coz we know it is not your native language.

Love your view on this (no homo). We are not all from the same cultures and I think the most important thing is to understand the intention behind calling someone dear. It is also very common in my country to start letters (and even e-mails) with Dear <insert name>. Though I agree it'd sound weird if anyone but my grandmother called me dear in person.Lol, calling someone dear! Is a very polite, respectful and mature way of greeting someone.
Calling someone for example an mature woman or children, Darl or Dear is a huge sign of maturity and can open mountains of steel and unlocked doors.

I have told customers, - Hello dear, or Darl.... the old ladies or more mature ladies, just looks up at me with a huge smile, sometimes i get in return. -- wow, you are very smooth....young man....very good...impressive !!
That a young man can be such a gentleman!! wow, they are ready to eat you for lunch!! and it is the word that made the heat go up a notch! for sure!
In writing, sure i use it if i have an establish relationship with that person, and it is female!
If i used it for a male client, it is still ok to put for ex. Dear Andy , that is how a formal letter should be done and it is academic. Informally it would be wrong of course, i would not call Andy a Dear when we meet or greet.
It is a great word used in the correct context or situation. Keep using it.

In Australia you hear that word all day long, but would you rather have the less unpolite word "ok Buddy"..? haha, no way for me i stick with Mate!
