Calling another guy "Dear" is NOT normal.

Well i am not so sure about it.If an old woman calls me dear is fine..but a guy?? In Europe where i am from..it is gay.

what i meant is .. in the US holding hands and hugs etc are usually done withe opposite sex or when someone is of a different orientation ( nothing wrong or even talkable about that , its thier choice in life and i think its great )

being a non-native I used to call " Dear" to most of my clients in USA, and then one day one of my client from Texas told me, it is usually use among Ga*s in Texas and from the day I scratched this word from my memory.

Some india guy keep calling me dear via skype, i said to him many times I'm a boy.

But he still keep calling me "dear" till now.

No offense, they meant friendliness hence just accept the polite gestures.
It is quite a common sight nowadays, learn to adapt to circumstances.

I was in a shop when visiting Sheffield the other day, and a man said "Thanks Duck"........to another man behind the counter.

Clearly by accident as well, as he followed it up with a lower pitched "thanks mate", and swiftly exited the building!

Lol, calling someone dear! Is a very polite, respectful and mature way of greeting someone.

Calling someone for example an mature woman or children, Darl or Dear is a huge sign of maturity and can open mountains of steel and unlocked doors.

I have told customers, - Hello dear, or Darl.... the old ladies or more mature ladies, just looks up at me with a huge smile, sometimes i get in return. -- wow, you are very smooth....young man....very good...impressive !!

That a young man can be such a gentleman!! wow, they are ready to eat you for lunch!! and it is the word that made the heat go up a notch! for sure!

In writing, sure i use it if i have an establish relationship with that person, and it is female!

If i used it for a male client, it is still ok to put for ex. Dear Andy , that is how a formal letter should be done and it is academic. Informally it would be wrong of course, i would not call Andy a Dear when we meet or greet.

It is a great word used in the correct context or situation. Keep using it.
