you can use "Automatic Featured Image Posts" and "Auto Post Thumbnail" to automatically add a featured image to a post.
As for automatically adding an extra image to the middle of a post, there are plugins such as "WP Random Image Insert" that allow you to do this. However, I should note that scraping images from Google or other sources without permission may be a violation of copyright laws so be cautious.

they are not are not built-in features in WordPress, they are plugins. "Auto Featured Image" is made by Creative Motion and "Auto Post Thumbnail" by WordPress.org.

Nice one, requires api but I am fine with it. I will use creative commons license so should be ok . Nice time saver.

I use 'Auto Post Thumbnail' premium version. It does the job nicely. You can also create a thumbnail with post title text placed over the image with your preferred alignment. It is a very useful plugin. It cost me $55 for 5 sites usage.

I'll be working on a custom solution soon (especially for in-post images).
I've been using Magic Post Thumbnail so far but it doesn't have many image manipulation features besides some pretty basic flip horizontally and crop 10% to make the image appear more "unique"
