Buying Whois protection or giving false info?

I was wondering if it's okay practise to give false info on your domain owner information? Is there's a penalty/illegal for giving false information or is it normal practise? :confused:

Newbie here trying to learn.

It's illegal to give false information, so buy WHOIS protection instead.
 
There are plenty of domain registrars offering free whois protection, just search for them :)

Dude, you know how many domains exist in the universe? There has never ever been a story about someone losing a domain for using fake WHOIS info. Some (admittedly limited) case studies showed PBN's became more effective when they removed privacy and used fake WHOIS instead. It makes sense, there is really no reason to hide WHOIS info unless you're a mega corporation that doesn't want a ton of people sending you shit email.
 
I am using fake info on a lot of my domains and never had any problem, but I am prepared for the consequences and so should you if you're using fake info because you can lose your account. If you value your domain then it's better to use whois protection than using fake info. :)

Google IS a provider now, they can see through ALL private whois... private whois does absolutely nothing in 2014. You are wasting money IMHO.

That's not correct actually. If a registrar becomes aware of inaccurate whois contact information, they are required by ICANN to cancel the domain registration within 15 days of notifying the customer and if no correction is made. This is one of ICANN's "registrar responsibilities".

I've actually taken sites down down by reporting their false contact information to the registrar. You'd be surprised how many people will fail to follow up before the 15 day grace time period ends or will just refuse to use their real info. A lot of time people still don't want to use their real information even when they are behind a whois privacy protection service because the registrar can disable the service if a TOS violation occurs.
 
Only 2.98$ per year on namecheap. And 1 year free for new domains.

I use false info and never got catched or arrested :) I usually search for pizza in some small town, pick their adress but change house number from 10/12 to 10/13 b :)
 
When I was a cheapass (now I use fake information), I'd use fake information, but it'd be of a WhoIS protection service. So it wouldn't be John Smith as the first name, it'd be Privacy Protect. I'd find several of those and alternate between them.
