paying for traffic in the adult niche is EXTREMELY expensive... starting in the adult niche is a lost cause anyway if you asked me.... its not 1998 anymore you know?!?!

imho paying for traffic only works well if you have a high converting and highly profitable sales funnel in place

Buying traffic is good choice when you choose traffic which is related to your website content (targeted). I use webtrafficgeeks or maxvisits because they offer a large selection of targeted traffic.

Its good to buy traffic if you are trading with other sites in your niche, You can buy a good amount of adult visitors if your sites well designed and targetted you could get some nice trades going, you can then just buy when needed to keep them going. I have used 100k purchased visits and kept a site at 150k/day visitors for over 12 months in the past using this.

site I had was a babe blog so could be different for you as im unsure of your exact niche

Buying a traffic is wast of money, you need to take place in organic search. Pay for SEO insist of advertisements and other paid traffic.

I think there is no problem with buying traffic. But it must be targeted traffic. Make sure that traffic from relevant sites. Otherwise you are wasting your money. Also Facebook promotion is a good source of getting traffic. Create some backlinks on relevant sites.
