Buying sandboxed domain?

I want to buy a domain with 40k exact searches and the .net is available... seems suspicious...
Is it possible that the domain had spammed links by previous owner and sanboxed by Google?

Avoid it. Get yourself a clean domain.

if you claim new ownership it might go out of sandbox, but rather avoid it

If it's an established domain and site:domain.com returns no results that's a huge red flag, because even a shitty site should be indexed by Google, even if it's not getting much or any traffic. That's not sandboxed... That's just straight up banned.

Try searching for "domain.com" and seeing what comes up, you will often see spammy backlinks show up in these results where the url is the anchor text, or failed link spamming attempts where the url is visible on the target page but isn't hyperlinked. You can also search for the domain in the various backlinking services.

If it's a parked or never-registered domain that's never been developed then that would be a valid reason for nothing showing up for the site:domain.com query. You can use whois.sc and archive.org to see if the domain has ever been registered.

when i search "xxxxx.com" i get 230 results with mostly whois sites.
when i search "xxxxx.com" -whois -domain (to try and filter most whois sites) i get 4 results.

And with those backlink tools i find 0 backlinks.

So this domain should be save to get?

Well if it is just parked and has no content then it might not be indexed. I have sites parked with godaddy that are not indexed. If there is a website on it and not indexed then that is a red flag. Good luck

It its a keyword rich domain and has some age, then it may be worth it. You can always submit it for reinclusion if it does not start appearing in Google a few weeks after putting up some content. It is not unusual these days for a parked or inactive domain to be de-indexed.
