This post is part informational but ends with an open question.
One question a typical person faces while browsing SEO Link Building packages is, "Why would they offer this service if they could be using it to rank their own sites?" Some sellers refrain from addressing this and others will say something like "The truth is we have more power than we know what to do with. So this is a win-win for both of us."
Then you dig deeper and start looking through the reviews. Granted there is no sure-fire way to vet those reviews, but BHW offers some protections in the form of thread approval and opportunities for other members to call BS if something is wrong. For the sake of this post let's assume all of the reviews are legit. As you scroll through pages and pages of reviews (not the hand-picked ones the seller screen grabs) you will likely see comments like "Just placed my second order. My primary keyword has moved from 42 to 18. Let's keep going and see what happens!"
And there lies the problem that I fear many uninitiated fall prey to. It is incorrect to assume that a service that can move a keyword from 42 to 18 will also be able to move into the top 10 after X months. This is where ROI comes in. If keywords you are targeting are not hitting the top 10, or top 5 if we are being honest, then you are not getting ROI. Spending $150 to get your keywords ranked in the top 50 isn't going to make it worth the money especially if you are just an affiliate marketer. The truth is if $150 worth of links could consistently rank keywords and provide a good ROI then sellers of those services would be hiring someone else to be building and deploying content to use their own service on. Put yourself in the shoes of someone who is currently selling a link service. If your goal is to make money can you think of any reason not to hire someone to build new websites for your portfolio and rank them?
I am not saying the sellers are being dishonest. I think in most cases buyers will see rank improvements and that's exactly what is being sold. Just don't expect ROI. It has taken me too long to realize this myself.
So this leads me to the next point. I think a lot of sellers have spent months and years building their own network of websites that they have used to rank their own sites. However, some sites may been penalized over time or just need more content and link diversity to look valuable. What better way to solve this problem then to charge people to post content on their own network and link to their sites. Sure, there may be some ancillary benefit to the buyer, but it also makes the seller's network that much stronger. This is what the win-win really means.
In retrospect I wish had started building my own network years ago, but it's better to learn now and take action. Don't look back 10 years from today and wish you had finally started!
Has anyone had different experiences? I would love to hear some stories about those who achieved ROI simply through buying links.
