This is my first investment into IM and I wanted to buy keyword research. The seller claims 4000 exact US searches and an EMD domain for $20. Is this a good deal or can I do this myself? If so, can you point me to a guide or something?

google this:

Code:
site:blackhatworld.com keyword research guide

the most important thing is competition level.

if your keyword's 1st page is flood with amazon, wikipedia, macy's and such giants - then its no good

Can't really answer properly from the info you have given. What is the adsense CPC? Is there an amazon product related to this keyword? And as mentioned above what is the competition like?

I recommend you look up a keyword research guide on this forum, and learn about buyer keywords, long tails, etc. Then when you start finding keywords that interest you, run them through Keyword Revealer, which is a free site that measures competition and suggests similar keywords. Don't consider this site as a be all, and end all. Use it to weed out the more competitive keywords, and focus on "low", and "very low" competition.

Good luck to ya.

Okay I found this keyword that is a city and has 33,000 exact US searches. I checked out the competition and this time and date website was number 4. Wikipedia was number 1 though. I think this is easy to rank, but the average CPC was 2 cents, so monetization might be hard. Should I go for it?
