Buying Expired Vs. Expriring Domains - what is the difference?

Hello! I see people trying to buy domains before they expire... But why not just go and buy an expired domain (e.g which I find on expireddomains net) with great link profile and high DA,PA,CF,TF? Is it all about keeping the AGE of the domain? If it's the AGE, then what about the fact, that the domain has been dropped many times in the past? Thanks!

Expired - the whois of the domain will show that the domain was dropped and re-registered.
Expiring - the domain will be transfered to you without actual dropping.
Arguably expiring domain should be better than expired, as the drop event could reset domain statistics in the eyes of search engines. But there's no real proof of this and even if this is true in some cases, in other cases it does not.

upd I've yet to see any really good free drops. Usually they are taken while they are expiring.
 
Bartholomew - Thanks! Yes, this was my understanding as well.. But look, if I check the history of any website in the wayback machine - 99,999% of sites have long periods of times, where there was no content or something similar - the domain has already been dropped many times, the last time last year for example. So what is the point in trying to catch it now?
 
you can try expired domains website you will find guides on youtube. how to choose a domain that way you can make good list of websites.
 
So who do you find out, whether the domain wasn't dropped before in its history? Thanks
 
Expiring means it has not dropped in history or is expired
 
expiring domains normally retain their age if you get them before they actually expire. Domain age is one of the crucial factor in SEO. Once the domain expires, its like a new domain, but still, it can have back links which can be useful.

In essence, both expiring/Expired domains are of great use!
 
i think buying expiring domains is great if you want to retain the links juice, which includes the permalinks, contents and stuff.

But both are great. i once bought an expired domain which ranked for it's keyword (it's an EMD) in 3rd page without any backlinks..

the keyword density is 45%
 
In my experience, the only thing that matters is whether or not the site has good/natural backlinks and whether or not they stick.

If these two check out, I don't care if it has expired/been dropped. I'm yet to see a real difference in terms of ranking power between expiring and expired domains.
 
Ranking, Aged Domain and help for SERP ranking. Fresh domains is fresh only.

Would have been nice if someone can report their successes with ranking expiring vs expired domains. I've taken few expired domains with high PR and had them ranking for medium competition keywords within days of getting some quality content up. This tells me the value is maintained despite the drop. Who else can can confirm this experience? As far as I can tell the non-epxired domains do hold up better but this is anecdotal.
