I have some questions in regards to buying a server since I anticipate that I will be running a heavy site with all my traffic methods coming in place.

What would you suggest as far as making sure the website experiences minimal downtime?

    Suggestions appreciated.

I would just go with a dedicated server at hostgator. This way the server will be managed for you.

I agree, if you are afraid of downtime, then you may try VPS before going for dedicated server.

Heavy traffic means you need a dedicated server.

If you aren't experienced at setting up & running a server then you need a managed server or to hire somebody to be your administrator.

Yes go for a fully managed server solution. Many recommend host gator, I have leased dedicated servers from handy networks fir years and have experienced fantastic performance and support.
