Is buying a logo a waste of money? Any tips on buying? ...

I don't like the fact that I have to pay before I can see the logo.

You can get a logo for $5 on Fiverr, with revisions.

Just ensure you give as much detailed info as possible, include samples/examples of ideas about what you're looking for. This saves the designers time.

Go to fiverr.com and chose high rated seller. If you have a problem with the design they can modify it I guess. But don't be too strict about stuff. Also, try to explain and describe what you want as clearly as possible.

All reputable brands etc and good websites have a logo, it's part of branding.

If you're meaning to go onto a proper webiste, then invest in one. For buffer sites, then these aren't as important.
 
Look on marketplaces for these. You can order and then some will revise a few times or unlimited for your logo.
