Hello BHW,

Could someone explain the important things to consider when buying a domain? I have seen somewhere else that someone mentioned to never buy expired domains.

What is the reason one should never buy an expired domain? I'm asking because the domain name I've chosen to buy for my first website is an expired domain :p.

Also, if someone could also explain the things to consider when buying a domain name and tools to use to find the information needed? I'm extremely low budget and could push for a monthly ahrefs or semrush monthly subscription but would be better if there are any decent alternatives that are cheaper.

Thanks in advance,
EG

Nothing wrong with an expired domain as long as it wasn't abused, it has a decent history and backlink profile, and a brandable/short name.

Use way back machine and check 5-10 updates for every year there is info for and make sure it was never used as a PBN.
I use ahrefs but I'm sure there are free tools like SEMRush and others that you can check backlinks and make sure there is nothing shady going on, chinese links, meds, handbags, shoes, anything unrelated to the domain.
Can send to me if you want me to take a look for you.

Thank you for the advice and the offer!! Well appreciated both!

I would like to do it by myself though, put in practice the advice you gave me! All this time in this forum I have been reading and it's all theoretical. Time to put something to practice, will use SEMrush as advised!

I dont even know whats out there any more but use as many free toools as you can as semrush and others aren't the best

Depends on what you would like to achieve with your website. If you would like something that could potentially rank quickly (assuming you can research the site's authority), then expired domain is the best choice - the site is already developed previously with links, thus, you just need to redevelop it as it should have some authority. Or if you want to rank better on local search results, then get a country level domain extension instead - it works great for local SEO.

Expired domains are great, just check if not spammed.

Closeout domains are also good, can get some great non-dropped highly aged domains.
