Was thinking of buying 1k followers just to give my account some "social proof" and increase my follow back ratio

Don't. It's not worth it, but well, in my personal and I say PERSONAL experience, my botted accounts with already 2-3k got more followbacks than my fresh ones.
It's probably because the person feels more worthy, I don't know.
