That's a strange advice to give in this day and age. If you'll only look for utility, you'll miss most, if not all crypto opportunities, because there is no utility, at least none that can compare with the hype. If he said, try to predict which crypto will get the most hype and sell when you reach profit targets as the hype increases (don't get too greedy with eternal HOLD-ing), that would make more sense to me.
Every single advertised utility out there can be achieved without creating a special currency or tokens for it. The currency alone has no utility, only pretending to have some by association with a project that is solving a particular problem by using blockchain technology, not because it is the best way to solve it, but because it is the most popular, marketable way to get funding and exposure right now. Crypto currencies are actually abusing the perceived utility to justify their existence, which is far from what their original purpose was: to curtail government and banking power. We are moving away from that goal now.
