    Hi

Like most of you guys, I have a few sites up and running. I'm thinking of buying my own server.

    Any thoughts or ideas?

If I did, can I use some of the server and set it up lime a VPS? and run my applications remotely?

Also, one of my sites is a porn site, so will this cause problems?

    Any thoughts gratefully received.

    Thanks

Porn hosting comes down to the country you're hosting it in. You'd have to check with the provider if it's permitted.

If you mean renting a dedicated server that often means you can do whatever the hell you want on that server (porn, webproxies etc) as long as it isn't illegal.

You'll definitely want to try WorldStream.nl for that sort of stuff - they're an absolute bargain as well. In fact, most of the hosts that allow Linking to Warez and/or XXX use WorldStream Servers. But, they're unmanaged so you need to make sure you know what you're doing.

I don't want to rent one, I want to buy one outright, so I have no hosting fees. I'm sure it will pay for itself quite quickly?

It depends on many factors. I built my own servers, which are located at various data centers (full rack cabinets) around the world.

It is possible that the server may fails due to hardware or bad hard drives, or many other reasons.

If you are bold enough to dive in, then go for it. Build a good quality server, with high quality components, and pick the right CPU and memory to work with the matching motherboard. My favorite site to pick CPU to be used for building new servers:

    http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html

After the server is built and tested, let it run for a week as "burn-in test" to make sure it works well. Then, ship it to data center for colocation services (managed or unmanaged) to place your server at their rack cabinets.

    Notes:
    - If you plan to build 1U rack server, you will need to clip off the memory heatsinks to fit inside the 1U server chassis.

    - Stay away from cheap desktop hard drives, as they will not last.

    Good luck! :)

Even if you bought/built the server you are going to have colo fees. Unless I had a connection on somewhere to put it I would just rent a dedicated server. I use a company for my VPS that I have been very happy with.
