Buy a Home?

The town I live in everybody owns homes. I feel like I'm the only one in my 30s that rent. My daughter who is in 1st-grade parents all own homes and hear I'm renting a freaking duplex! I only pay $700 a month for a three bedroom duplex that needs updating (average rent 1600 month in my area). It's my parents home. I thought I was never that type of person that should care what others think and since my daughter been in elementary school I feel bad I don't own a home. I been self-employed for two years and doing well but geez you tell these parents where you live and they get all titanic shit with you!

In your opinion should I try to buy a home or continue living in my parents duplex and renovate it and own it one day and use it for rental?

I guess I will keep this stuff to myself lol. Yes, old 3 bedrooms duplex I rent from my parents. Yes, it sucks when you live in a town where people are judgemental.

Why would you care what others think when they are living in massive debt and barely get by living paycheck to paycheck? You're paying only $700 a month for a 3 bedroom place that you could get from your parents later on? I would live and save and use that as a rental! You should be asking questions like this on Trulia or some kind of real estate forum. My bet would be most people on this forum don't even have 3 bedrooms let alone own their own home haha
 
Well ....how much houses in your area/ town sell for? I live in LA and cheapest shit here is $750-800K for some stupid 900sq house with 2 bedroom and one bath or whatever! then if you get fire... forget it as insurance will find any reason not to pay you. I have a friend who lives in ATL and owns a palace 3000 sf house for like $350-400K, 5 bedroom, 6 bathroom, so its depend. If houses around you sell for $100-200K and your mortgage will be around $1000-1200 it may be worth it to move out but if its less and housing market crash once every 10-12 years then I will hold a bit since prices are way too high for buyers.
 
How do random nobodies know that you rent your house? I guess that you would have to tell them in the first place. I also guess that the subject is never really brought up for you to have to confirm whether you rent or bought. Unless of course you bring it up yourself.

If some random nobodies asked me if I rented my house or owned it. I'd likely ask what the fuck they want to know for.

Also, a lot of people are basically renting off the bank, near enough till they die.
 
I've always had friends and family call me lazy for working from home and because of that I got a job.

Once I decided to stop caring what they think and took my online income seriously did I succeed.

The average home in my area is 400K for a 3 bedroom.

If you don't volunteer the information, others would never know in the first place.

There's no need to lie about your circumstances, but there's also no need to overshare. If you know someone would be judgmental about you renting your home, simply tell them that you got it from your parents, which could be interpreted as the home being a gift, an inheritance, a purchase, or any number of other circumstances that don't involve rent.

When I go to parent conferences at school parents always ask where I live and If you knew the town I live in you would know I likely rent unless I own the duplex. Besides, some douche of a parent can find out if you own or rent from the town hall website.

If someone goes to that much effort to find something 'wrong' with you, they'll find something else to ridicule you over even if you did own a home. Nothing you do will ever be enough to earn their respect or friendship, so just live your own life and let them live theirs.
 
So if its going to be your house eventually, why do you need to buy a house? Just renovate it over time if your parents are okay with that.

Yes, I was thinking that but I feel like I'm the odd one out not having a single family home. I have to get over that insecure shit. Ever since I been self-employed I heard negative stuff from my wife's side and now I realized shit I need to buy a home... I'm 36 years old. My parents want me to take over the duplex one day and I was thinking I can renovate it and rent both sides out and then later buy a single family home.
