Needless to say I have the website that is the exact match of a town I live in. I want to monetize it and realize the best option is more than likely a business directory that costs to be submitted. I am only going to charge businesses 19.99/month to stay on the directory as well as a 49.99 placement fee. How would I go about setting up the directory? Should I buy a directory software? Any ideas/suggestions would be great!

I am doing the same thing for the lawyers in my city. I would also like to know the best way of setting up a directory. I would even pay someone to do it.

edirectory is a great ready made directory platform. It is expensive though and the nulled version require some coding fixes that can be a little bit fiddley.

There is Sobi-Pro for Joomla. The initial component is free but they charge for the addon components.

There is a few wordpress plugins but I haven't tried any yet. Was gonna try one of them for my next directory site.
 
I've seen DirectoryPress in action... it's not too shabby depending on what you're looking for.

Citof.c0m - which is located and headquartered in my city - runs a business based on City Directories... so I know it can be profitable. They have a staff of probably 15+ and i've been to an interview for them for a web design position... but they didn't want to pay anything but minimum wage.

Directories can make money if done right... I'd learn from them and not try to reinvent the wheel that much.

Here's my suggestion. No business is going to want to join a blank site, contact local nonprofit charities and offer them a free listing on your site. This will give you some content for your site, and add a little trust, creating a halo effect for businesses to join.

When you start to sale (If you cold call/email), you can now name drop the charities. You don't have to mention that you gave them a free listing, just mention that WWW, XXX, YYY, and ZZZ have all signed up to start using your service.
 
What is the latest update on everyone who posted on here? How is your directory site? What did you end up using?
 
Im also looking for a nice directory Tempalte/plugin...
Havent found anyhting usable & cheap yet..
