Bulk Publishing Articles - What are the risks?

Hey everyone,

I'm running a brand new media outlet (fresh domain) focused around professional business news. I've been publishing 40 - 100 articles a week since March. The site has been getting a consistent 500 - 2000 readers a week, mostly from socials. The site organically got some minor backlinks in the first couple of months.

In July I decided to massively up the content volume to around 500 articles a week. The traffic exploded and backlinks greatly increased during that time (organically). It was essentially this week and last week and I can continue it for the next 6 months or so before I run into budget issues.

My questions are:

- The site is currently not ranking for very much (just tiny longtails), is this a product of being new and taking time to become established and rank, or is there a bigger issue here?
- Bulk publishing content like this is something I have had success with on larger established sites, what are the risks of doing this on smaller / new sites?
- How long should I wait until I change approach? And what should I change approach to?

Where is the content coming from?

When you say traffic exploded, I don't see it that way. GSC shows 100 organic clicks a month? did you mean traffic other than organic?

The backlinks acquired, are they legitimate links or just scraper sites? I would assume the latter, but if not then that is awesome.

What is your content strategy? are you researching keywords and targeting low comp? or is this a news type site?

Content source: GPT for a guideline of the content with a team of 10 writers and 5 editors writing, amending and improving articles.

Traffic exploded: Just an increase of social traffic and sharing on platforms like Reddit/Linkedin etc...

Backlinks: 90% are from companies press pages or blog posts saying "We were featured on [my website]", so legitimate, not scraper sites. Of course there is some misc scraping sites in there I cannot control.

Content Strategy: There is no keyword research, it is just news content along with some listicles that are targeting lawyer keywords.

Good stuff, GPT with manual input on news style content should work well.

So you're sharing your content on social media? is this your strategy though? I am trying to understand your end game, is it organic or social or both? what are you trying to do? any targets in mind?

In terms of SEO, the gains will be minimal in the beginning, and yes your method is a bit dangerous since this is a new site and you're hammering semi automated content right away in large numbers. If you had an aged site, or if you were using an aged domain with a solid link profile, then your results would have been better and your strategy more bulletproof overall.

Backlinks sound good man, I would keep this up and see how it goes but imo this is a high risk strategy. If your focus is mainly driving traffic through social media then you have nothing to worry about.

Google really doesn't mind how many articles you publish daily as long as the quality is good. Don't believe any myths.

Yeah, I am sharing the content on social media, but also it gets some organic shares as the social pages are decently sized and the news content is relatively engaging.

The long term strategy is a mixture of social & organic. I'm trying to model the approach around startups.co.uk which has a mixture of news content and long form content that ranks really well.

I'm wondering if I should make some schedule where the content volume starts low (10 articles a day) and ramps up over time to a more sustainable level. If that would make any improvements to the strategy.

The issue with the pure social approach is that as it is news content it is relatively expensive to maintain and we would need 1m+ readers a month to sustain the 15 person team. If we can get organic traffic we can integrate sponsored articles more effectively and open up new revenue streams more successfully. E.g. Affiliate sales work much better through google than socials.

Has this changed in the post GPT world where content is much cheaper and easier to make? And is there limits? e.g. 1m articles vs 1000 articles?

The only issue will be indexing, newer sites don't get a big crawl budget. That is if your content is well done, but since it is GPT Idk how well you're editing it and what it reads like. Automated content in large quantities is very hard to get right imo, but you can play it and see how it goes.

It all depends on what you call mass.

Personally, I've had good results publishing first at a rate of 5, then 10, then 15 a day, until I got up to about 40.

I have no idea how legitimate this strategy is, but in my case the results have been good.

I'd rather have a head start and be ready to churn out 40 articles/day for 3 months than churn out 1K very quickly and nothing

The risk is being deindexed fast forward.
