Buliding links to "website.com" and "website.com/" ?

I have heard on a conference that URLs e.g. "website.com" and "website.com/" are duplicate URLs.

Is Google smart enough nowadays to filter this out? To my link builders I always provide form website.com/, but sometimes they use form without the slash.

What is your opinion?

I am pretty sure Google is that smart.

Though using both looks natural instead of 100% no slash and vice versa.

But seriously. Wouldn't it make sense to 301 redirect the website.com => website.com/ ? Just to pass the link juice.

You can if you want to but I don't think it's necessary

You can also throw in a "www.", if you REALLY want to outsmart Google!

Just kidding..

Use different variations of your URL, as well as linking to more of your interior pages.

Actually 301 redirection of www. to non-www (or vice versa) is a classic best practice to avoid duplicate content - stated by every serious (printed) book about SEO I have

I once read about the / or not / thing and the server pretty much searches for index.php or index.html when you arrive to the just / address and 301 redirect you to index.php/index.html file. So in the end, it doesn't matter.
