I have just bought a domain (IE newdomain.com) which has a 301 referal to my main site (olddomain.com).

I've been concentrating on building links to my old domain - the one I want to rank well. What would be the effects on both domains if I start building links to newdomain.com ?

i heard that subdomains count as differnet domains to your main domain, so why not make subdomains then link to your main domain, then get the subdomains indexed :S

It has nothing to do with subdomains, buddy.

@OP: I have similiar thought. In my case my maindomain has been wasted with spammy links, i ask myself if i can buy a new domain and redirect via 301 to the new.

In your case it would be a good method to take the redirecting domain for borderline methods of linkbuilding, so you won't risk a penalty for the main domain, but i cant answer this competent.

What i do know definately: If you redirect an old domain with pr this will be transferred. I used it and got a good ranking instantly on my new domain - so stringent thought - i should work.

Thanks a lot for your reply. I'm aware of the PR juice.. was just wondering what effect it would have if I build regular backlinks to the redirecting domain - would it increase SERPs of that domain, or my main one? :)
