Building a new PC only for automated tools need advice

Hi.

I am on a 40 Mbps up/down connection and want take advantage of this by building a dedicated SEO PC that can run 24/7.

I have build many PC's in the past but it has been 5 years since I build the last one.

I really need some advice on how to set up a PC that is perfect for running automated SEO tools. I would like a small form factor and quiet operation.

So what is the state of the art today? CPU? RAM? Motherboard? Coolers?

I will not need drives or graphics since I intend to get access via remote desktop. More or less a self hosted VPS I guess.

All advice are most welcome.

Not rocket science, a good cpu and much ram. You never defined your budget so no one can give you an advice.
 
My budget is $500 - $1000

What is a good CPU these days? Intel? AMD?

How much RAM is needed?
 
I went with a core i7 ( a K version means it's unlocked and you can overclock it), make sure you get a good motherboard (I made a mistake to go for a heap one), 8-16 GB RAM and also make sure you get a fast HDD (size doens't really matter) with large cache. Oh, and go for an intel network card (worth every penny). Make sure you get a big enough power supply to sustain all the components (I got a 450 W one) , and a large cpu cooler (not many fans, just big radiator made of copper).

First off, VPS stands for Virtual Private Server. Key word here is "Virtual" so in essence you will not have any kind of self hosted VPS (Unless you build a Hypervisor, but that is beyond the scope of this thread...). Self hosted Dedicated Server yes. Enough on Semantics....

I don't know where about in the world you reside, but by me we have a place called Microcenter (there is another place on the coasts called Frye's that is a geeks wet dream!) that runs specials on Mobo/CPU combos all the time. That would be your best bet.

In regards to CPU, RAM, Graphics (you will want some sort of graphics card to hook up a console to for OS installation and also for debugging...), Hard Drives (you will need these also, even if accessing through RDP, as the hard drive is what runs the OS!).

I run on a Intel Core 2 Quad, 8 GB RAM, and a 1TB HDD (was only like $30 on special a microcenter some time ago...) with a 50/50 connection and have great results. I built my system on $400 budget. So $1000 dollars can go a long way. Just have to do the right research!

The beefiness of the system really depends on what tools your going to use...

I concur with the Intel Network card. I run them in all my machines, and the Tier 1 hosting provider i used to work for used them religiously!

I am tuning in on a setup.

One question: When you recommend an ntel Network card you mean an a separate PCI card right? Almost all motherboards have Realtek og Gigabit onboard cards.

Do anyone know if it is possible to boot a PC via remote desktop?
 
If you really want to have extremely fast PC, go with i7 definitely, I have it on VPS and it's super beast! + Good ram and SSD if you wanna good graphics.

No you can't. As far as i know.. If it's off you got no connection to it and it needs to be started manually.
 
Don't get in I7 there isn't much between the I5K and the I7K. Get a hhd and a ssd if you have 1k for your comp. 1 to load from and the other for use.

I personally would start at new egg build a wishlist then post it here. Be sure to make it public so we can see. I will help after that. PLus it will be way more fun for you this way.

Go with dedicated box, unless you can put the box in the basement. In long term the noise makes living a bit irritating, especially at night :-)
 
I built a computer about 3-5 months ago. I got all my parts from newegg.

I spend most of my money on the PSU, CPU, Motherboard and the graphics card.

I went with an amd processor and 8 GB of RAM.

I got information and help on the parts on techsupportforum.

I probably spent around $800 in total...
 
I would not overclock the CPU since this is running 24/7 and in that case heat is your worst enemy.
 
AsRock is an ok board for a low budget box. Your specs are not server specs by any means. Cheap case, cheap board that you'd never find in a server.

Having said that, it will probably last you a 2-4 years if you keep it cleaned out. Server grade cases and boards are about double what you have there. I've been a real computer store owner for 23 years now. For servers I'm partial to Supermicro and Intel boards. For cases I like anything with real steel and weighs about 20 lbs empty with locking panels and hot swap easy access drives. Not that you probably need this quality but running a server 24/7 with a 99% uptime requires more than home PC quality components.

Also someone mentioned Asus motherboards. OMG, only if you want to be fixing the damn thing all the time. Our business has RMA'd more Asus boards than any other board we sell. Hell they get more RMAs than PC Chips. We no longer sell anything by Asus. Overpriced cheap shit is all it is. Only good thing I can say is they do honor their warranty, but who wants a computer with downtime?

Lastly make sure all the fans are ball bearing fans. Nothing more frustrating on 24.7 machines than swapping fans every year.

If you're sending this off to a datacenter or need to run it remote you can purchase and install a KVM. WOL is almost standard these days on better boards. But the system has to be in suspend or sleep mode. Not turned off. There are network devices that can power on a computer from a connection but probably outside a reasonable budget.
