Building a forum without wordpress

I have purchased WordPress some months ago but it wasn't the premium plan, and now I can't rebuy. Long story but I sent my friend btc and my friend bought it with paypal, my paypal is limited and no card payment option appears where i live. So I can't upgrade. Is there a free forum plug-in I can get?

ps, it is made with rails as far as I know. If you are looking for php based ones, I think phpbb and mybb would be your best choice (free).

There are many alternatives to Wordpress - Simple Machine, phpBB, Flarum, Codoforum, FluxBB and many more. Do a little research about them on Google and you will find more info on them.

Wpforo is the best for me.
It has lots of customization options even for free

For free forum software I would recommend only two options:

Flarum - flarum.org
MyBB - mybb.com

If you opt to go the paid route, BHW seems to be doing well with XenForo - xenforo.com .

To your original thread post (I have not tried this. However, if I were about to test a WP Forum plugin this would be among my first choices to try.):

bbPress - bbpress.org

A lot of what you choose to use will depend on what capabilities are important to you, along with the type/feel of the forum you want to create. Template and Theme creation can be an involved process if you are not a web developer, so be sure to look at template and theme options when you are "shopping" for your forum software.
