Hey folks. I have a lot of contacts for a specific industry which relies on internet traffic to help with its business model. I'm looking for recommended software that I should use.

I am find with buying it if needed. There needs to be the ability for me to import the content data and then have it show on the directory. I will then email the people in the directory letting them know that they can pay a few dollars to upgrade their listing. Therefore, it will need to include a payment module.

Thanks for your help. I've looked at DirectoryPress and it is nice. The blog does not have to be Wordpress but it does make things easier.

How is that working for you? Is it a lot of manual input? I used Joomla years ago and it's just too much for what I am trying to do... at the moment.

    I'll look into your recommendation.

    Thank you.

    Hi,

I'm still getting to grips with Joomla and Sobi and haven't got round to the data import yet which looks like it's a manual process unless you buy a plugin.

With regard payment for upgrades etc, there definately is something available in Sobi to apply payments to individual fields such as website or description.

Post an update once you give it a whirl. It would be great to have more product reviews here - or maybe a product review sections - mods.. there's an idea.

Use meeplace and bill them more. Look it up, it will blow them away. Best directory software out there right now. It has facebook connect, you can add events on specific dates, star ratings of businesses, users can make profiles, it analyzes pages to show businesses that are "hot" right now, shows recent reviews, &etc&etc. I'm not a meeplace salesman, but I bought it last week for a niche directory of my own and it's the best out there. $350.

EDIT: They will also do custom coding, and they upgrade their directory software every so often. 2.8 is supposed to be coming out this week or next. You want to have a directory people will actually use, that's a pretty damn good selling point.

I highly recommend you take a look at IndexU

This is a program that is not very well known here I think. It has been in development for many many years, and the code is very mature. The developer is reasonable in their pricing, and they have a lot of other tools that can help you along also.

However, their IndexU directory in my estimation is primo quality, and will deliver exactly what you are looking for. You can import directly if you wish, and if you want, you can even import additional links from DMOZ just to get your DIR started so that it looks like you got others subscribing. Important for all those corporate drone who want 'me too' status. :)

Just head over to nicecoder.com and you will find what you need. There is a nice 7 day free trial there for you to test it out.

    Good luck

I have looked at the three scripts listed above:

    - Meeplace
    - DirectoryPress
    - IndexU

For those that have tried anyone of these in a real application, please take a few minutes to review the one you are using and what you think is the good, the bad and the ugly regarding your experience using it.

Thanks so much for your help!

I use PHP Link Directory for my directory.

take a look at mine and you can see what all you can do. I love it. Yes sure there are some things that I wish were different but this is the best one that I have found to get close to what I wanted.

eDirectory (edirectory . com). I haven't used it, but I heard it's a good product. There is a nulled version out there for you to try.

Exactly, good luck is the point here. Indexu does not work or import the DMOZ categories or links and there is ZERO support. Head over to their support forums and look for yourself. Lots of angry customers getting no answers. Supposedly this was a great script at one time which is why I chose to buy it rather use a nulled version.

Meeplace is DEFINITELY the way to go if you want a professional script with professional support
