As far as I understand it quality is the key, at least, with Google it seems to be. Much better to concentrate on getting 50 quality links from sites that Google will recognise as being relevant to yours. Spend your time finding sites like this that have a high pr, maybe 4+. Maybe if you cost your time to manually link build or the cost of tools like xrumer it would actually save you money too.
