Build Backlinks to HTTPS site?

Hey BlackHatters, I recently purchased an SSL for my domain. It's an authority WordPress Amazon store so I thought why not add in the SSL since my domain registrar gave me a great offer.
In correspondence to that, I also redirected my site to HTTPS instead of HTTP.

First of all, was that a good thing to do?

Secondly, from now on out, should I be building links to the https version of my site instead?

Would greatly appreciate your responses.

Yes and yes. HTTPS is a ranking factor and will give you a slight boost in your rankings. You should also build links to your HTTPS site, as you will lose link juice if you link to your HTTP site because it 301 redirects to your HTTPS site and 301's lose some link juice with them.

Although you might lose some link juice linking to HTTP it's a safer alternative in the long run, because if you drop your SSL at any point for whatever reason all of those HTTPS links will result in a 404 error or a similar server error, because the page cannot be served.

Thanks for chipping in your thoughts guys.
I figured that if this site didn't make enough to cover the SSL fees by the time next year, I might as well shut it down. So there probably would be no reason for me to drop the HTTPS links. Plus, I do not have too many links to the HTTP site anyway, might as well build new links to the HTTPs...

Easy fix - redirect all 404 to homepage. OP u shoul build backlinks for both versions and redirect all 404 to homepage or other page of ur choosing.

If you no longer have SSL, would you still be able to serve the https website? I think what the_demon is trying to say is that you already will not have control over the https, thus you won't even be able to serve the 404 error. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Build links for HTTPS. Period.( according to your statement, you'll shut the site down after a year if it's not profitable. Put your best foot forward)

I personally wouldn't invest time or money in a site that is a prime target for de-indexing. These Amazon Wordpress Shops tend to have a survival rate of a few months maximum. From my experience the "Onpage Whitehat, Offpage Blackhat" approach with a high quality site works a lot better than these cheap cookie cutter sites. The times pushing duplicate or thin content worked fine are over...and even if you are playing the "Churn & Burn" game a few hundreds bucks this kind of site may make a month aren't worth the effort, too.
