Broke programmer checking in - Hello Everyone!

Hi! I'm a 34 years old guy, a Jack of all trades and semi-master of some. The main reason for joining in this community is the hope that I'll be able to monetize my hard earned programming skills and don't have to worry about how the heck I'm going to pay my rent this month doing boring, low paying design jobs.

I'm bringing to the table some design and programming knowledge which I'll try to share with you guys and I hope to get ideas and knowledge about making money (legally) online.

I guess I'll start reading "Making Money" section in this forum so talk to you later!
Also I could appreciate if you could point me to other interesting starting sections for guys who have the technical know how but are oblivious to the actual ways of using that knowledge for profit.

Welcome aboad, that's a difficult question to answer as there is so much on here. when i first joined i just surfed the site, reading things that interested me. Once you get the feel of it you'll soon find the sections that interest you

Short time lurker even shorter time member, if you want to leverage your skills maybe ask around to find someone in need of a bot? If you understand how to use the various API's needed to do so you could make some serious bank.

Thanks for the tip man, I'll surely use it. Actually I'm reading a book about making bots in C#, http protocol, etc - it's really, really fun

Welcome - what book are you reading by any chance? What languages do you know? If you have some web dev experience - perhaps learn how to make wordpress plugins?

When it comes to software development it's far far better to specialize and be a master in a few areas rather than knowing lots of stuff but nothing extremely deeply.

It's pretty challenging to just make money with programming skills. Business is all about creating value for the customer. You have to figure out where in the marketplace you can position yourself such that your skills can be utilized to create lots of value for a customer.

If you do freelancing for small jobs people here tend to not have much money or not want to spend much money and don't at all realize how much time, effort and expertise it takes to create software. So they might want to pay $100 for a bot but I won't get out of bed for less than $1000.

If you can get bigger commercial customers and actually deliver real value to them there is big money there but it requires a team and a lot of resources. It doesn't sound like you're in that position.

The biggest opportunity to monetize software development skills in this space is making a tool that people will actually pay for and selling a one-size fits all solution to the mass market of IMers. Anything that saves time and effort is good. Anything that acts as a force multiplier to typical IM activities is an excellent candidate for development.

I used to think as a developer I could use my skills to just create an automated system and life would be sweet. It really doesn't work that way. You need to create real value for people which they exchange their cash for the value you bring to the marketplace. You have to really study business and marketing, do a tonne of market research, decide on a plan and then execute it.

The absolute easiest way to monetize programming skills is live in a rich western country and get a job as a developer. It pays awesome and it's very easy. Outside of that... it's a tough game.

I'm on the same page as you, i studied IT. Started with C, then c++ and c# in the 3rd year of school.
I now make Website, but currently can't live by my own, so im broke.... living with my mother, i know.....

I'm trying to get information, and definitely will try to get a normal job but in another country, looking forward to migrate to Europe, or another place where i can work and live.

If you can i would say check Australia, and New Zealand, also UK.

I was wondering yesterday about guys like you for example, you say you've studied IT, but in school ? not in university and you have don't have an IT degree or ?

That's right, started System Engineer but could make it, i was working and couldn't dedicate to much time to study.
You can study the last 3 years of school with dedicated IT subjects. You start with C, also coding some bash and learning Linux terminal and environment, then at the second year you learn c++, and then you finish and graduate doing a project, developing a system with C#. that gives you a degree of Technical Assistant. And you can develop small projects, and also participate in medium size projects.
You have all the normal subjects from a normal school, but some of them are less demanding.

When you finish, you can definitely go to a university. I decided to learn web development and started working as a freelance, is good when your young, but it kinda get more difficult over time, you have to keep learning by yourself.
It's my perspective of course, I started being like a heavy monkey coder, i think i still am a little less over time.

Skills pay the bills. I know people that studied coding in universities but end up working at McDonalds.

On the other hand, kids that read a few books and did the work are hustling and freelancing online to make the money.

Thats true, a lot of people from my school decided to follow the IT path, not because they have an interest in Informatics for example... they do it just because, people working in these sectors have a nice salary. And guess what 90 % of them failed. It's all about being passionate about something and the motivation comes itself

No problem man, the easiest way money wise would obviously be to join a company, but this is blackhatworld. Bots are in huge demand, if you want any ideas for them feel free to ask just about anyone on here.
