Everyone is saying broad match is the way to go now with google's ai, but my search terms are still looking like junk. what are you guys seeing? is it worth the switch or should i just stick to strict exact match for lead gen?

Broad match can work with smart bidding but need good data and negatives, for new or small campaigns better stick with exact or phrase for clean leads.

In my experience, broad match + Smart Bidding can work, but it needs constant monitoring. It often pulls in irrelevant terms, so adding negative keywords helps. If lead gen is your focus, mixing it with exact match gives better control. It’s a bit of trial and error to get it right.

Works… but only if you have strong conversion data.
For lead gen, broad usually = junk queries.
Better to keep exact/phrase and test broad on the side.

in my opinion broad match can work with Google AI, but only if your tracking + conversion signals are really strong. for lead gen I suggest sticking mostly to exact/phrase and using broad only in small tests with heavy negatives.

honestly bro broad match + smart bidding work but only if account have good data, if low data then google just spend on random junk searches, i tested and saw same issue like you, for lead gen i still prefer exact and phrase match more control and better quality leads, maybe keep small test campaign with broad but dont go all in, keep eye on search terms and add negatives daily.

Yeah it can work well now, but only if your conversion tracking is solid and you give enough data, otherwise it just burns budget fast in my experience.

Broad match with Smart Bidding can work, but it depends on your campaign and how well Google’s AI learns over time. Some people see good results, but others complain about irrelevant terms. It’s worth testing if you have a solid conversion tracking set up and are willing to let Google optimize. If you're focused on lead gen and want more control, exact match might still be safer, but mixing both could be a good strategy.

Broad match + Smart Bidding can work, but it takes time to get right. Google AI tries to find relevant searches, but sometimes it messes up. If your search terms are junk, add negative keywords and refine your targeting. If lead gen is the focus, sticking to exact match might be better. Test both and see which one works best for you.

broad + smart bidding works only with strong conversion data, otherwise traffic is messy, for lead gen exact + phrase is still safer.

The junk search terms problem with broad match usually points to one of two things: not enough conversion data, or the account is being asked to do too much too early.

Broad match with Smart Bidding is a data amplifier. If you have 50+ conversions per month with clean tracking, it can genuinely find intent patterns you wouldn't think to target with exact. If you have 10 conversions a month, it just burns budget on garbage because the algo has nothing real to learn from.

For lead gen specifically, my sequence is: start manual CPC with exact/phrase, get to 30+ conversions in 30 days, then switch to tCPA. Once tCPA is stable for another 30 days, test adding one broad match campaign alongside separate campaign, not mixing match types, with a healthy negative keyword list from the search terms you've already seen convert. Never go all-in on broad until you have that baseline.

The mistake most people make is flipping to broad too early because Google recommends it in the interface. Google's recommendations optimize for spend, not for your ROAS. Their recommendation to switch to broad comes the moment an account has any data at all, not when it actually has enough.

Also worth checking: if your search terms look like junk, verify your conversion tracking is firing on actual qualified leads and not just thank-you page views or soft events. If the algo is learning from low-quality signals it'll find more of them regardless of match type.

Exact/phrase for control, broad as a separate test after you've earned the data for it. Thats the order.

@LUONG VAN VIET made some solid points about the data sequence but there is a major trap with broad match on lead gen... bot spam. If you run broad, bots will find your lander and submit fake info. Google's AI sees that form submit as a conversion and then optimizes to find you even more bots. It becomes a feedback loop of burning cash.

If you really want to try broad, you have to use offline conversion imports. Only upload the leads that actually talk to sales or get qualified. If you just optimize for standard form fills, broad match will kill your margins. For most lead gen campaigns exact and phrase is still the play... broad is just too much of a donation to google.

Try running a separate experiment campaign with broad match and Smart Bidding to test it safely. Keep your main budget in exact and phrase match until the AI proves it can deliver quality.
