So I'm a little bummed today.. because I spent a good amount of time late last night researching new pet boarding, grooming, and kennel tech software options for the company I work for.. only to find out they've already done the research and the options won't work for us, because of 1 small but major issue, and they've already tried to work it out with the owner of the software I was looking at changing us over to.
So we're currently using K9Bytes which is absolute piss.. and after doing a bunch of research on their competitors I decided Gingr would hit an entire flock of birds for us with one stone. Only, they've already looked into them, and they won't work because kennels set to checkout that day - cannot be made available to rent out by another client that same day. We board to capacity as it is, so this is a major problem for us.
Now the problem lies in the online reservation module of the software, and I don't know how deeply that runs into the other bits and bobs of functionality, but I'm the type who likes to get all my questions answered and find creative ways to quickly circumvent issues like this....
However, they would really like to go in-house it seems.. and while I'm all for designing the software myself, I'm not a bullshitter and sure maybe I can print something that works well and looks great (It worked out that way for me for web design) but that doesn't mean it'll work that way for programming.
In any rate one of my major dreams in IT is to provide a powerfully strategic minimalist suite of business software.. but at the same time I've been knocking balls out of the park left and right for this company - and I just got so excited about Gingr as a potential powerhouse fix... if you can understand my frustration.
So I guess I need some help figuring out where to begin - and not necessarily with creating our own solution, but maybe a creative way to circumvent that issue.. ya know?
So some questions I have are:
1. If I go in-house which language will get me where I want to go, has increasing demand in the job market, and can help me with my own projects and specialties which would be automation, exploits, and fancy onsite widgets and plugins.
2. Is there a way I can legality export and change the Gingr code - I mean I know this is shady, but if there are ways of essentially doing it that are legal, then I'm all for the war.. I know that's terrible. I hate it, but if I can legally provide the same functionality, custom fit it, and change some design elements... then, and I wouldn't do this for myself, but I may consider it as an option - or more importantly use the knowledge to come up with my own solutions.. such as just reviewing the code a learning from it. I wouldn't actually rip-off any software even if it could be done in a legal way really.. I'm just pushing the think button here.
3. Is there anyone who would be willing to be a point of contact in which I could ask some programming questions directly? I would gladly provide my expertise in CRO, Marketing, and Business Strategy in return just to pick your brain.
4. Most importantly what are typical TATs for development projects like this? If I take on the project, I'm wondering how long it might take me.
Maybe I'm just finding the idea of providing this solution for my employer a bit daunting.. I know I could do it. I would just hate to waste his time if you know what I mean.. not to be a pessimist or anything.
Any kind of guidance would be more than appreciated.
Speaking on the time-frame.. I guess it's more about becoming a solid developer as opposed to becoming "fluent" in a particular language.. out of curiosity how long should it take someone to become familiar with programming and development in general?
