Bought a .US domain.. Did I just mess up?

I bought a .us domain since it was cheaper, and setup a blog on it for a niche keyword. Was that just a complete waste of money?

So I should be able to outrank my competitor in that keyword? I mean they are on the first page of google with a .com of the same thing, but it just goes to a godaddy landing page.
