Hi guys,

I bought a nice domain name a month ago. Got website work done on it which cost me about $2000. Now when I was going through random websites using SEOquake, I saw my domain's age is from 2007 ??? I registered it last month in 2014. How do I tell if this domain is a bad and how do I check if it is penalized? Please help guys, thank you.

Why do I have a feeling you blew $2000 on a lesson learned? Was that spent on programming, design or content?

Design + Content.. any suggestions?

I made the same mistake in the past. After registering I saw the domain jumped to PR1 right away. I took a look and it had hundreds of pre-existing backlinks, from porn domains.

For future reference always check the below before purchasing a domain name
archive.org/web/ and domaintools.com/

Thanks for the quick reply. I checked http://ismywebsitepenalized.com/ and got a green light. Ahrefs I can't use yet as I have already looked at a domain today. Is http://ismywebsitepenalized.com/ good enough to determine this?

I think you need to check back links to know for sure. I'd be at least a little relieved to get the green light along with the knowledge that just because a domain is old doesn't make it a bad thing. Maybe you found a gem. You can only know for sure if you use the other tools available

Also, you always have the option of moving your site to a new domain. With WP anyway, not sure about anything else

Hope your domain is live now in google. Type site:yourdomain.com if you can see your domain in search results, it means your domain is not banned by google.
There is no right tool to detect your site has penalty(panda, penguin, DOG, humming bird, CROW). You need to research at some extent to know that yourself.
In google type info:yourdomain.com you can get all the info's available in web. Look for all information if you find any spammy links just use disavow tool and disavow it.
Use backlinkwatch .com and see your site backlink profile.
Go to archive.org type your domain in search. See What old owners used this site for. If they were into same niche as you planning to do, then your are bit lucky.
If they promoted sex/adult related products, then you may be in risk.

Same as google. If you have plans to promote on social media. Just try post your URL in FB, Twitter, G+ and pinterest.
If that domain is banned by any of those websites, you wont see the link after your post your URL.

If your are not happy with the results. Your $2000 won't get wasted. Contact your designer to completely transfer all your design stuffs to a new domain.
If your domain is clean and you are happy with it. All the best.

Shows no backlinks on ahrefs.. Any other backlink checkers that are free in mind.

Thanks a lot for the reply btw!

On archive.org I only see screen shots from 2007 till 2009 and what am I looking for on Domaintools.com? Its telling me to buy a report for $50.

Hate to do this to you bud but I'm not exactly a pro myself. All I have left is http://lmgtfy.com/?q=backlink+checker. First use all of the tools mentioned already. scorpion king has some good advice. Archive.org is a good one to check out

Maybe 2009 was it's last active date. Just check what the screenshots show and if it's legit that's another plus

Thanks for the great advise. Still a bit blurry, will find an answer by tomorrow I hope!

One quick advise, stay far away from domaintools.com!
Every time a whois lookup is done they let the information get indexed by google (which is not legal but they do it anyhow). This way if someone searches for your full name or the name of your site (presuming you use your actual name) this whois data will show up in google results.
