We all know about diversifying anchor text to make our back link profiles appear more natural. But are you taking care and attention to where these links are actually pointing?
Build links to your inner pages to Boost your rankings
I've seen it millions of times. People start to do SEO on their new site and they begin to build backlinks... Great
The problem is, they only build back links to their home page. After a few months they have hundreds or even thousands of back links but no rankings! and they wonder what the hell is going on!!
Think about this for a minute... If a website has say 20 pages and 600 backlinks, and 597 of them link to the home page, do you think this looks natural? no it doesn't, but I bet u've probably done this at some point or maybe you are doing it right now.
If your site has 20 pages, then it's fair to say that the majority of your content is on the 19 inner pages. If these 19 pages are not getting any backlinks, then why on earth would Goggle trust your site? Not only does it look totally unnatural to have all of your links pointing to your home page, but it is also telling Google that your site is not that important if nobody is linking to your actual content!!!
So why do we fall into this trap?
This is usually the case....... you make a niche website and you put your main piece of content on your home page and you optimise this page with your keywords. You then monetize this page to try and make money because you want everybody to land of your home page. You then realise that your site needs more content because we have it drummed into us that content is king and that we need more of it on our site! So you go about creating articles around your topic and you post them on your site. You think it's great that you have added an extra 19 pages on content. You sit back and continue to build links to your root domain....
But not much happens
You have nearly 100% of your backlinks going to just 5% of your total content (home page)
This means 95% of your content has no back links!! which = Not Trusted
Evidence
I had an old niche site lying around and it was stuck on page 4, whatever I did, nothing was pushing it up the rankings, so I had a look at my 'top linked' pages, and I found that almost all of my links pointed at my home page. So I set up a couple of campaigns to build links to my inner pages. After a few weeks the site shot up to 12th position... Not bad!! but after a couple of months I got it to page 1, and not only that but it was also receiving more traffic from longer tailed keywords and all of my pages were getting more hits!
My site now has a solid backlink profile with links pointing to all of my pages. The home page now has around 75% of the total links instead of almost 100%
I also spent a bit of time analysing random sites using ahrefs to see what their backlink profiles looked like. I found that the majority of sites that were highly ranked had backlinks pointing to most of their inner pages. I just did a search relating to web 2.0's and the site ranked number 1 for the term I searched had a nice mix of back links throughout the site, in fact, the home page was NOT the most linked to page on his site!!!
Funnily enough, I just Clicked a random search result on page 6, and guess what? All of his 114 links were pointing to his home page!!!!!!
So what should you do?
You've got to build links to your inner pages. There is lots of software and services that provide this. Lets say you are submitting articles to an article directory. If you are allowed to include 3 links then link once to your home page and twice to 2 different inner pages. Mix this up and spin your resource boxes so that all of your inner pages get some links.
Never link to the same page twice from 1 article. Ive seen this a lot. You are allowed 2 links in the resource box so you go and link to your home page twice :banghead: Again this is totally unnatural, don't do it!!
If your site is struggling or you are just starting out then take this into consideration and build a natural looking backlink profile that builds authority to your whole site!!!
Hope this helps
