Is it possible to do this ? Or a way to get round it if sites like digg and mixx don't allow it ?

some sites allows it (like delicious). You can use bmd or bookmarwiz (belongs to nossie frm BHW) to generate bookmarks with random keywords.

So there is no way to get round this ? What if I create a sub domain and redirect to the page and submit that ?

Bookmarking same link with different keywords is possible, only that they will find your url already there and you have to click on "its a different story", the bookmarking sites ask that we have the same story or link already, is your story similar or you have to say something else.

So go ahead and optimize for different keywords.

You can use url shorteners, as long as they redirect with 301 it should be fine, I did it, it works, unless the site allow only one bookmark/domain (some do).
