This just occurred to me, shouldn't we review the backlink profile of the 301 domain to make sure it wasn't previously linked to any bad neighborhoods such as gambling, etc?
You have answered your own question before:
As long as the domain has not been de-indexed. You can search using site: in Google and cache: in the search field.
This is why you do the cache method before you buy the domain.
If the domain passes those and has been cached, you can use it.
Google does not keep track of the sites that an aged domain has been linking to. For example, if the domain is 10 years old, Google is not going to remember it linking to a "bad neighborhood" 5+ years ago because most likely that other site no longer exists.
