Blong rings, bookmarking purpose?

Hello, something is confusing me. Read an ebook that says something like:

Create blogger blog
Create wordpress blog
Create squidio

etc

Then it says, link blogger to wordpress then to squido, then to this then to that.
Each with links pointing to your site. And update them daily with fresh content.

What is the purpose of this? I mean, if I create 10 blogs and link them in series and each one is linking back to my site. All of this work is for 10 backlinks?

I'm just missing something here. Or do multiple backlinks from 1 site mean anything?

Maybe this was just to get "indexed" and spidered method?

Just starting a link strategy and started writing articles and submitting and have created a wordpress blog, blogger blog etc.... Just a little confused..

Any ideas?
