I've successfully posted a few thousand comments on do-follow BE blogs (PR 2-8), and my SERP for my small niche haven't gone up at all... are they useless or what?

Well, If you comment on 1 PR3-4 page with OBL less then 20, I'm sure you'll get a change in the SERP :)

What ever be the number of comments or do follow you post, there should be readers first of all. Content should be useful too.

OBL's are a factor for sure, and it seems there just are not that many blog engine blogs compared to wordpress. I tried to find fresh within 24 posts on Blogengine and the list is small :)
