I really hate elitists. It's just as easy to give an answer as to post something rude.
A blog is a Web Log. Originally they were like online journals, but programs like wordpress, which I use exclusively, can be used to create any kind of site you want.
I have a membership site based off wordpress. I have seen article and website directories using it. You can create more traditional page based sites pretty easy. The options are only limited to the plug-ins you can find.
