I'm about to start my legal content business, and I'm seeing lots of conflicting opinions as to whether I should be going for a fully fledged wordpress.org blog with SEO/GEO and other plugins etc... or whether I should be focused instead on building a paid newsletter audience on Ghost.org or Substack?

I can see a market for both, (1) a website with tons of free content with digital products, ads, and affiliate links, and (2) a newsletter with some free content and some premium content accessible for $10 a month, with affiliate links.

(Socials will be used to promote both)

Which is the more likely to be the best strategy in 2026 as things stand? All I see these days are how Google isn't going to give you traffic anymore, and a smaller engaged newsletter audience that gives you $10 a month is the far bigger asset in 2026.

What's your view?

@Kidi

My problem is that both will have the same content. Anything I can think to write on the blog can also go on the newsletter and vice versa, so there will be a lot of duplication of I choose both?

I think both can work, but I wouldn't rely on only one channel. A website gives you long term search traffic and a place to build content, while a newsletter helps you own the audience.

If it was me, I'd probably build the site first and use the newsletter as a way to keep returning readers instead of choosing one over the other.

What would I put in the newsletter that wouldn't be in the blog though? All the content I can think of belongs in both a blog and a newsletter, so running both I don't know what to put in each or duplicate?

legal especially benefits from the newsletter model, recurring revenue isn't at google's mercy and ymyl seo is brutally slow/competitive anyway

I'd go with a WordPress site as the foundation and build an email newsletter alongside it. Search traffic may be changing, but owning your website gives you more control, while the newsletter builds a loyal audience you can monetize.

I wouldn't rely on just one channel in 2026, use SEO, social media, and your newsletter together.

That's a good point. I don't think the newsletter has to be completely different content.

The blog can be more searchable evergreen content, while the newsletter can be more personal updates, opinions, quick tips, case studies, or things you don't necessarily want to make into full articles. It's more about building a direct connection with readers.

You should start with a blog. Google traffic is less predictable now, but a website is still your main asset. You can use it to attract traffic from AI search, social media and your newsletter also. After that use the newsletter to keep your audience engaged.

If you want long term traffic then a blog helps through SEO and can bring leads over time but it takes time.
A newsletter is better if you want faster audience building and direct income.

Instead of considring these two publications as oppoed to each other, I would recomend that they complement one another. Let the blog be an introduction for you, while the newsleter keps your audience updated.

Put up evergren article about legal isues in your blog in order to improve your SEO, but write about the legal isues on your newsletter page. Esentially, you are dealing with the same isues, but in diferent format.

Choose Blogging if your primary goal is to establish industry thought leadership and capture long-term search traffic.Choose a Newsletter if you want to cultivate a loyal community, monetize quickly, and control your audience without algorithm changes.
