Hi there,
I couldn't find this on search. I have a niche site and write posts to target keywords. They are all related as a micro niche, and share some tags. A specific tag is ranking in google but my posts are not for their keywords. I don't mind the tag ranking as it brings traffic, but why on earth does it rank higher than my seo posts for that keyword? The tag is not even my complete keyword either. Anyone encountered this and came up with any solutions/conclusions?

This may be because of keyword density .... a tag page has 2 or more posts which together can look more beneficial to google .
Generally this is temporary and sometimes its permanent, start doing some offline seo for post pages.

Do you have a tag cloud in ur sidebar? or on the homepage?
If that tag is linked in most of the pages, you are telling google its of more value.

Ideally, don't index your tag pages to avoid duplicate content.

you are ranking for keyword in the same niche or in one very different
because when you write articles you are ranking for a lot of keywordp and themed phrases

Chip. How can I de-index my tag pages? Do I have to do this through the robots file? I believe I do have tag clouds on my site, I will remove that or deindex the pages.

I am tempted to just delete all of my tags unless someone can tell me how they can be useful. My website is not really set up so people will want to click on a tag to read more articles regarding that specific tag.

If Google likes your tag pages then build more links to them and Google will love your site even more. I don't see what the problem is with tag pages ranking. Monetize them and make money. Problem solved.

I do this on all of my WP sites. I use noindex for categories as well.
I achieve this by using Platinum SEO plugin. There is an option to use noindex on tag pages, archive pages, and categories.

Its better to not let google index your tages. Because it can take it as duplicate content. So let it index only your pages and posts and sitemap. Nothing other than that. All the major seo plugins do have this feature. All in one seo, platinum seo, yoast seo plugin. Just play around them

No offense to anyone here but the idea that Google doesn't like tag pages or that tag pages are bad for SEO makes no sense whatsoever. The existence of this thread is proof of that. Tag pages rank well. There are certainly good and bad ways to use tag pages but in general Google loves tag pages. If Google didn't love tag pages we wouldn't see these threads pop up every other week. If Google didn't love tag pages it would not rank them highly and send visitors to them. Google loves tag pages but SEOs don't because they have their heads in the SEO ideology instead of in the search results. Care more about what Google likes than what SEO gurus tell you and you will love tag pages as well.

I have a post on my site which is ranked #1 and my tag in ranked #2 for same keyword. Now will google see it as duplicate content because if they do i will make it "noindex in all in one seo plugin"

I would suggest you to redirect tags to blog posts, you will see the results soon enough :)

Use 301.

You are off base, even though you look mighty cute in your Santa hat, love the spirit :)

Tags are a part of the FRESHNESS deal Google is doing now. If you get a tag ranked, it will be short term and main content won't be ranked again... In my experience. Remember the week Twitter posts were ranking? I always deindex tags now. This won't be 100% across all niches or keywords of course but just common practice for me. I'm in no way an SEO expert LOL but please de-index your tags on WP.

I found this problem today on my site.

I don't want to mess things up, but also fear that google might penalize me.

What to do?
