i personally think it is useful but not very very powerful becos I've done both manual quality blog commenting and mass automated blog commenting using scrapebox..
seen a bit of improvement in SERP but not a lot...and no great traffic increase as well...
Not sure is my technique is wrong or not..

But of course, blog commenting is one of amongst the many methods if gaining backlinks out there. So if you value your backlinks, then comment away.

From my experience with blog commenting, it is great for both backlinks and a boost in traffic to your site although my main use of it is for backlinks. There are numerous approaches to take depending on what you wish to achieve. For example you can post well thought out comments on hand selected blogs or else you can mass comment to a large number of sites.

I sell my own products and get sales from posting valuable information on related blogs.
I don't think blog commenting could give you good traffic but I know it will give you quality backlink.

I see a little increment , but honestly blog comments alone can only damage your site or not even helping it much. Variate your linking sources! Thats the key

Exactly like having free websites to advertise with. With good value and comment you rightfully earn the trust of the readers and of course the blog owner itself, so they wont think twice on visiting your site or accepting your blog comment.
And if your site has a killer sales page or has a unique and engaging product, expect some turn out in sales too.

Does anyone know if you can get banned from ad networks for comment spamming? I amthinking about doing it but I am trying to stay white hat for now.
It is an excellent way to build links and get better rankings when it comes to search engine results. Blog commenting is mainly done for recreation purposes, providing opinions and reactions regarding different subjects provided by people in their blogs. If you don not spamm, you can get the following benefits from blog commenting
1. get a backlink from a blog on a related niche
2. get traffic
3. make friends
4. take part in some intersting discussions.

I have done it for my sites and I can say that it's mostly for get links and lower for getting traffic. But as beginner I made a failure to make many comments, so I advice to check sites before well doing it. And don't use blog commenting software cause then it's easy to get penaltized by Google if you are not prefessional in this, so for beginners like me I could advice not to make much comments.
