Would manually commenting on niche related blogs with a link back to my authority site be okay in terms of SEO?

Would this be considered spam, even if the comments were thoughtful and related to the content?

Thanks

Well if the website the comment comes from is itself well established and you know that they are actually doing comment moderation then go for it. But if they don't have moderation then there is always the risk of unlimited spam external links.

don't use your keywords as anchors and you'll be ok :)

Thanks for the help guys

If these comments go through moderation, then its ok. Without moderation its little bit risky for Authority site.

Only on sites with moderation, always brandname or real name for the link, no keyword links from blog comments at all, no links from the comment text...and you are fine.

Edit: Do it in reasonable numbers, slowly and steadily, 30 comments in one day and nothing for the next 14 days is definitely a red flag.

it's good if you can get a do-follow link. Most blogs are no follow but can still drive traffic to your site.

The key with blog commenting is to make it look natural and link to relevant pages. None of this "Thanks for the great post. Buy Twitter Followers". Obvious spam is obvious. Make your comment cognizant and relevant to the post. Looks for pages that aren't spammed to death with other comments. Like someone said above, moderated pages are your best bet.
