usually, you'll want most of the backlinks to point to the homepage, but have a few of them point to internal pages as well.
Like, for example, say that you have 10 good backlinks (the bad ones don't matter where you point because they'll not help anyway) and your site is fresh and has no backlinks yet. I would point 6 of them to the homepage and the other 4 I would point to 2 important content pages that are informational.
And the "informational" part is apparently very important as one of the more expert guys of the forum -
@splishsplash - had said in a recent post (which I can't find at the moment) to be of significance in today's SEO landscape.
So, if you have commercial pages (best [whatever], [whatever] review, etc.. this type of pages) and informational pages (how to do [whatever], top 10 tips for [whatever], why does [whoever] do [whatever]. etc) then you'll want to point the remaining 4 backlinks to 2 informational pages like these.
But anyway, this was an example of how I would use 10 good backlinks, you can split them however you want obviously, but if your site is new and has no backlinks yet (therefore no authority) try to build up its authority first by linking to the homepage MOSTLY (not exclusively)
