Can someone explain why would someone want to blank his referrer?
is it in cases that your'e an affiliate sending traffic to a merchant and don't want the merchant to find out how your page looks like? why wouldn't you want that? it could be against the merchant terms, can't it?

To answer your question, Some affiliates don't want to get their source of traffic stolen, other reason is that they are doing blackhat methods and that's one way how to get away from the ban hammer. I did wrote a detailed info on why we blank our referrer on my blogpost.
Oh, so you mean it's used basically only in cases in which you would have direct link to the advertiser page,
rather than cases in which you direct visitors first to your own landing page (which you would have to build of course)?

Yes, I think you got it or I just miss your point. LOL
Basically, If you don't want to them to know where your traffic is coming from then you will need to blank it.
